Hello and welcome to our November newsletter!
This month we would like to start by introducing our new referral portal.
Despite changing times, most of our new patients are still introduced to us through local word of mouth.
We are one of the few remaining independent, local clinics in the area. Guildford Chiropractic Centre has been proudly serving the community since 1953, with many local families returning to us for generations. The trust we've built within this community has kept us at the forefront of the local wellness industry, and we are incredibly grateful each time you recommend a loved one.
If you know someone in pain, help them find relief!
We can arrange either a Full Initial Consultation or a free 15-minute chat with one of our experienced team members to discuss their concerns.
If they're feeling unsure about visiting a chiropractor—especially for the first time—you’re welcome to join them during their consultation, or they can bring another friend or family member for support.
Simply click the link below and fill out the form with their contact details, and we’ll reach out to schedule an appointment. Please also leave your own details so we can thank you with £10 off your next visit (when they book and attend an initial consultation. Ts & Cs apply.)
Referring your friends and family is the BIGGEST compliment!
Autumn Adventures: Backpack Tips for Comfortable Hiking (Written by Philip Hehir D.C.)
Autumn is truly a beautiful time of year, with vibrant leaves painting the landscape and a crispness in the air that beckons us outdoors. It’s a perfect season to get walking and explore the stunning landscape around us. As a chiropractor, I can’t stress enough the importance of maintaining good posture and ergonomics while you enjoy the great outdoors. Recently, a patient asked me about the best way to wear a backpack while hiking, which inspired me to share some essential tips. Hiking is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature and stay active, but using a backpack incorrectly can lead to discomfort and long-term issues.
Hiking with a Backpack
1. Weight Distribution
Proper weight distribution is crucial when wearing a backpack. Pack heavier items close to your back and higher up to help maintain your centre of gravity and reduce strain on your spine. Aim for a load that is no more than 20% of your body weight; if you’re carrying more, it might be time to reassess what you're taking with you.
2. Adjusting Strap Height
The height of your backpack straps can greatly affect your comfort. Adjust the straps so the backpack fits snugly against your back without sagging or pulling you backwards. Ideally, the top of the pack should rest just below your shoulder blades, helping you maintain a natural posture and reducing the risk of back pain.
3. Double or Single Strap?
While some hikers prefer the ease of a single strap, using both straps is generally a better option for longer hikes. Double strapping evenly distributes weight across both shoulders, minimising strain on any one area. This technique helps prevent muscle fatigue and potential injury, particularly with heavier loads.
4. Use of Hip Belts
If your backpack has a hip belt, make sure to use it! A hip belt transfers some of the weight from your shoulders to your hips, improving weight distribution and reducing back strain. Ensure the hip belt fits snugly around your hips without digging in.
5. Take Breaks and Stretch
Even with proper techniques, it's vital to take regular breaks during your hike. Use these pauses to stretch and relieve muscle tension. Focus on gentle stretches for your back, shoulders, and hips to keep your body relaxed and prepared for the journey ahead. Being mindful of your body will help prevent injury and ensure a more enjoyable experience.
6. Listen to Your Body
Finally, always listen to your body. If you feel pain or discomfort while wearing your backpack, don’t ignore it. Adjust your pack, redistribute the weight, or take a break. Persistent pain might indicate that your backpack isn’t fitting properly, and it could be worth consulting a healthcare professional.
If you do experience any pain or discomfort while hiking, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Guildford Chiropractic Centre for advice and support. Your spine will thank you, and you’ll be ready to enjoy many more autumn walks ahead!
Happy Hiking!
