October newsletter - Clean Living this Autumn!

Hello and welcome to our October newsletter! I’m Annie Hehir, the practice manager here at Guildford Chiropractic Centre, and in this month's newsletter, we're focusing on clean living to improve our health, the environment in our homes, and the world around us.

At Guildford Chiropractic Centre, we’re focused on helping you maintain your physical health. But did you know that what you put in and on your body also plays a crucial role?

Clean Living: It's More Than Just Clean Eating

We often hear about clean eating, which has been a rising trend for a few years now, with many major brands taking steps toward reducing the amount of ingredients and additives in their products. But do you spend as much time focusing on clean living? This concept goes beyond just food—extending to the products you use in your home and on your skin. By focusing on clean living, you can support your overall physical health in ways that also improve the environment in your home and the world around us.

Why Now is the Perfect Time to Focus on Clean Living

As the days get cooler and we spend more time indoors, it’s a great time to think about creating a healthier, toxin-free environment at home. Many household products contain substances that can have long-term effects on our health. Reducing exposure to these potentially harmful substances benefits not only our personal well-being but also the environment—a win-win for both us and the planet.

At Home – Simple Steps to Focus on Clean Living

One of the resources I highly recommend is Nancy Birtwistle’s book, Clean & Green. It’s filled with practical solutions and tips to help you swap out conventional products for natural, eco-friendly alternatives. Nancy also shares valuable insights on her Instagram account (@nancy.birtwistle), making her content accessible and engaging. Her approach simplifies the process of going green and living clean!

The Yuka App: Find Healthier Swaps for Food and Cosmetics

Another fantastic tool to help you make smarter choices is the Yuka App. This free app allows you to scan food and cosmetic product labels to see how safe they are for your health. The app not only highlights potentially harmful ingredients but also suggests easy swaps for cleaner, more sustainable products. With the Yuka App, making healthier choices becomes simple and stress-free!

Ultra-Processed People: A Final Thought

If you’re looking for more reasons to avoid processed foods, Ultra-Processed People by Dr. Chris van Tulleken is a must-read. This eye-opening book delves into the effects of ultra-processed foods on our health and well-being. It’s the perfect place to start if you want to put yourself off processed food for life!

Tips for Focusing on Clean Living

  • Read Labels: Familiarize yourself with ingredients that might be harmful.

  • Make Your Own: Explore DIY recipes for cleaning and beauty products using safe, natural ingredients.

  • Use the Yuka App: Make scanning labels a habit to choose healthier options.

  • Stay Consistent: Small changes over time lead to significant improvements in your home and body.

Reformer Pilates: Supporting Recovery and Function in Later Life

Reformer Pilates is gaining popularity, often showcased on social media with young, flexible individuals. However, it’s also a valuable tool for rehabilitation, particularly for older adults and those managing chronic pain. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, Pilates  has evolved into a method that enhances strength, flexibility, and body awareness.

A Reformer is a specialised piece of equipment that uses springs and a sliding platform to provide adjustable resistance, making it suitable for various fitness levels and safe for injury recovery. This adaptability allows for gradual strength building and movement improvement without undue strain.

Reformer Pilates benefits those with long-term lower back pain or recovering from surgeries like hip and knee replacements. Its gentle, precise movements are ideal for enhancing mobility and strength safely.

At Guildford Chiropractic Centre, Chartered Physiotherapist Sara McGowan leads Physio-led Reformer Pilates sessions, drawing on 32 years of rehabilitation experience. Each programme is tailored to individuals dealing with chronic pain, injury recovery, or post-surgical rehabilitation.

For more information on how Physio-led Reformer Pilates can assist you with chronic pain or post-surgery recovery get in touch!  (Free 15 minute consultations in person or by phone are available with Sara before booking)

Earlier this month, our wonderful Clinical Massage Therapist, Hannah, approached me about sharing the excellent #ThereforME campaign, run by one of our clinic’s patients, Karen, who has given her consent for us to mention her. Karen has recently been featured in the media for her efforts to highlight the need for more support for those suffering from ME and Long-COVID, including appearances on Channel 4 News, BBC Radio 4, The Times, and The Guardian.

We recognise that many in our community are familiar with these struggles, and we are more than happy to support this important campaign. We encourage you to take a moment to learn more about it by visiting their website at https://www.thereforme.uk/.

And Finally…

Physio - Led Pilates Availability:

When we first introduced Physio Led reformer sessions we had a long waiting list for appointments.  Sara has now added some extra availability into the diary which has eased this so if you had wanted to book a session and been put off by the long waiting list, please get in touch.

Your Feedback Matters:

We value your feedback as it guides our growth. Whether you have suggestions for new services, improvements to existing ones, or ideas for our next newsletter, please let us know. Your insights are invaluable.

Stay Well, Feel Great:

We hope you're feeling fantastic and moving with ease. We eagerly await your next visit to the clinic, where our dedicated team is ready to assist you on your path to wellness.

Wishing you a healthy and toxin-free autumn!
